South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Namibia, Mozambique
Southern Africa has something for everyone – from the wildlife paradise of the Okavango delta to the stunning wine regions in South Africa to the vast beauty of the Namibian Desert. With diverse tribes, cultures and histories, this really is the complete destination.
Botswana is often referred to as the perfect combination of wildlife and luxury – and it’s easy to see why. The Delta is unlike anything else in the world and there’s no better way to see it than gently paddling along in a mokoro. But Botswana has much more than the delta. Watching the African night sky unfold in the Makgadikgadi Pans is unlike any other experience we’ve had in Southern Africa whilst the Moremi Game Reserve was voted the Best Reserve in Africa not so long ago.
South Africa is a country with such diversity it’s hard to know where to start as it’s a destination that has it all. The beauty of a South African itinerary is the ability to include just about everything that makes this such a stunning continent in one trip – wildlife, culture, history and glorious landscapes. The wildlife viewing in the private reserves surrounding Kruger National Park are second to none and combine real luxury with real adventure. The remote aridness of the Kalahari and Karoo is beautifully offset by the amazing wine, food and scenery of the garden route. Then of course there is Cape Town – in our opinion the most beautiful city in the world. With a multitude of sites and attractions it is without question an absolute must for any trip to South Africa.
Nothing quite prepares you for the vastness of Namibia. Endless skies with countless stars, unbelievably huge sand dunes and desert stretching to the horizon are just some of the memories that have stuck with us most. Sossusvlei is truly otherworldly and the desert-adapted wildlife, although a little harder to find, really make it a unique experience. But it’s the people that leave the longest impression – the Himba, San Bushmen and Damara tribes alongside the German descendants in Swakopmund make Namibia a destination unlike any other.
Walking safaris are probably our favourite way to experience Africa and there is no better place to do it than in Zambia. It’s certainly more rustic than its neighbour Botswana but it makes this a more authentic, old style of Africa – which we love. Of course there are the massive herds of Elephants and Buffalo to be seen in the lower Zambezi and the many Leopards of Kafue, but there is no more iconic sight in all of Africa than Mosi-oa-Tunya, the Smoke That Thunders. Victoria Falls is the jewel of the Zambian crown and truly a sight to behold. Top it all off with a sundowner cruise along the river and you have your perfect African day.
The best safaris are an adventure, and after any adventure you’re going to need a bit of R&R. That’s where Mozambique comes in. Mozambique is the quintessential beach destination; white sand, crystal clear water, fantastic food with amazing diving and snorkelling – what more could you need? With daily flights from both East and Southern Africa, it’s the perfect choice to finish off your African Journey in style.
